Buy once, fitted right, or do not bother

Most disappointing lock hardware is not bad hardware. It is decent hardware fitted into a door that cannot support it, or hardware chosen on looks with no attention to the one number on the box that predicts how long it will last. Both of those are avoidable in a phone call.

Our default is supply and install: we bring the hardware and fit it, so there is one conversation and one person accountable if something does not sit right. Install-only is equally welcome — plenty of people have already bought something and just want it fitted without splitting a door frame. Either way, the honest opinion comes first. If the thing in the box will not do what you are hoping, you will hear that before it goes in the door, not after.

Deadbolt grades, and what the number buys you

Almost every residential lock sold in the United States carries an ANSI/BHMA grade — a published performance standard, not a marketing badge. There are three tiers, and the difference is real but narrower than most people assume.

Grade 3

The entry tier. It passes a basic cycle test and a basic strength test. It is what arrives on a great many new-build doors as builder-grade hardware, chosen because it satisfies the requirement at the lowest cost. It works, it will not last, and on an exterior door in this climate it is usually the first thing worth replacing.

Grade 2

The sensible middle. It is tested to substantially more operating cycles and more applied force than Grade 3. For a back door, a side door, an interior garage door or a rental, Grade 2 is a defensible choice and the money saved is better spent on the strike and the frame.

Grade 1

The top tier, originally a commercial specification that has become widely available for homes. More cycles, more force, heavier internal parts, a longer service life on a door that gets used constantly. On a front door or any main entry it is what we recommend, and the price gap over Grade 2 is smaller than the durability gap.

The critical caveat: the grade describes the lock, not the doorway. The test is performed on the lock assembly. It says nothing about the strike plate, the screws, the jamb, or whether the door itself is solid. A Grade 1 bolt throwing into a thin plate screwed into soft trim is a Grade 1 lock in a Grade 3 opening, and the opening is what fails. This is why we will sometimes talk a customer down from a more expensive lock and spend the difference on the frame instead. Single cylinder or double cylinder — the trade-off nobody explains

A single cylinder deadbolt takes a key outside and has a thumbturn inside. A double cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides and has no thumbturn at all.

The reasoning behind a double cylinder is straightforward: if there is glass next to the lock, breaking it lets someone reach the thumbturn. Remove the thumbturn and that route closes.

The cost of that reasoning is severe. In a fire, in smoke, in the dark, everyone inside now needs a key to get out of their own house — including guests, children, and anyone who did not know the door worked that way. Emergency responders forcing entry face the same barrier. That is why a double cylinder is a last resort rather than an upgrade, and why the better answers are usually elsewhere: laminated or security glazing in the sidelight, a deadbolt relocated further from the glass, or a lock designed to be keyed inside only when the household is out.

Where a double cylinder genuinely is the right call, the rule is that a key lives permanently within reach of the door, known to everyone in the household — and never in the lock, which defeats the point entirely.

The strike plate is the cheapest security you will ever buy

When a door is forced, the lock body almost never breaks. The wood around it does. The bolt tears through the strike plate and out of the jamb, and what actually failed was three-quarter-inch screws biting into a thin piece of decorative casing.

The fix is unglamorous and extremely effective. A heavy-gauge strike, ideally a box strike that wraps the cavity so the bolt is captured on all sides rather than sitting in a rough hole, fixed with screws long enough — three inches is the usual figure — to pass through the jamb, past the shim space, and bite into the structural framing behind it. Now the force of a kick is spread into the building's frame instead of a strip of trim.

The same treatment belongs on the latch strike, not only the deadbolt strike, since the latch is what takes the first impact. Doing both on a front door takes a fraction of the cost of a new lock and does more for the door than upgrading two grades of deadbolt would.

Reinforcing the door, the frame and the hinges

Once the strike is sorted, the remaining weak points on a typical entry door are predictable.

The door slab itself. A hollow-core door is an interior door and has no business on an exterior opening; the panel around a lock can be pushed through by hand. Solid wood, solid core, fibreglass or steel are the exterior options. If a door already flexes when you push it, no lock will save it.

The lock area of the slab. Boring two holes through a door removes material exactly where the force lands. A wrap-around reinforcer plate spreads that load back across the slab and also tidies up a door that has had several different locks over the years.

The hinge side. Hinges get ignored because the lock is on the other side, but hinge screws are usually just as short as strike screws. Swapping the middle screw of each hinge for a long one that reaches the framing costs almost nothing. On an outward-opening door with exposed hinge pins, a set of security studs or non-removable pins stops the pins being a shortcut.

The gap. If there is a wide gap between door and frame, the bolt has less engagement and there is room to work in the gap. Sometimes the right answer is an adjustment or a longer-throw bolt rather than a new lock at all.

Knobs, levers, and who has to use the door

Handles are usually chosen for looks, which is fine, but there are two practical points worth making before the order goes in.

Levers are easier to operate than knobs for anyone with arthritis, reduced grip, full hands, or a wheelchair — you can open a lever with a forearm or an elbow. In commercial settings that ease of operation is largely why levers are the norm; in a home it matters most where an older relative lives or visits, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than defaulting to what matches the cabinet pulls.

The offsetting consideration is that a lever is a longer arm and therefore easier to catch or force downward, and that a low lever can be operated by a dog or a small child. Neither is a reason to avoid levers; both are reasons to make sure the security on the door comes from a proper deadbolt rather than from the handle latch.

Handlesets — the tall single assembly combining a gripped exterior handle with a deadbolt above it — solve the appearance problem on a front door and simplify keying, since the whole set arrives keyed alike. They also require a specific bore pattern, so on a retrofit the existing holes decide what will fit without patching. Details on handleset installation.

Salt air, humidity and finishes that survive here

Hardware in Niceville lives in a marine atmosphere. Even well back from the bayou, the air carries moisture and salt, and it gets into every part of a lock that was specified for somewhere dry.

Two things fail. The visible finish goes first — pitting, white bloom on brass, a satin nickel that goes blotchy in a season — which is cosmetic but tells you what the air is doing. The mechanism follows: cylinder springs and pins corrode, a key starts to feel gritty, and eventually the plug binds. That is why locks here often stop turning long before their cycle life is anywhere near used up.

What helps is straightforward. Choose hardware rated for coastal or severe exterior exposure rather than the standard interior-grade finish. Prefer stainless internals where the option exists. Keep the cylinder lubricated with a dry lubricant made for locks — oil and general-purpose spray attract grit and make the problem worse. And treat a key that has begun to feel rough as a warning rather than an inconvenience, because a cylinder replaced on a Tuesday afternoon is a much smaller event than a cylinder that seizes with the family outside. Direct-exposure openings — gates, sheds, pool equipment, boat storage — take the worst of it and are covered on padlocks and gate hardware.

Keyed alike, and keeping the keyring honest

A house that has had hardware added over the years typically ends up with a front door key, a back door key, a garage side door key, a shed padlock key and a gate padlock key — five keys for one property, four of which get left in a drawer until the moment they are needed.

Most of that is fixable at the point of purchase. Hardware sharing a common keyway can be keyed alike so one key runs the whole property, and new hardware can frequently be keyed to a key you already carry, so an upgrade does not grow the keyring. Padlocks can be brought onto the same key as the house. The constraint is the keyway — hardware from different families will not accept the same key without changing cylinders — which is exactly the kind of thing worth settling before the order rather than after the fitting.

Where a household wants control over duplication as well as convenience, a restricted or patented keyway limits who can cut a copy of a key. It costs more per cylinder and it is not necessary on every door, so the usual pattern is to restrict the entries and leave the outbuildings on standard hardware. Safes, honestly

Safes are the category where marketing does the most damage, so here is the plain version.

Fire rating and burglary rating are different things

A fire rating comes from a furnace test: the safe is heated to a specified temperature for a specified time, and it passes if the interior stays below a target — around 350°F for paper documents, considerably lower for digital media, which chars and warps far sooner than paper does. A one-hour fire rating means one hour under those specific test conditions.

A burglary rating comes from an attack test: how long the safe resists tools in the hands of a technician trying to open it. Residential Security Container is the common entry-level designation; the higher commercial ratings step up from there in tool sets and time.

These are separate tests measuring separate things. A safe can carry a strong fire rating and almost no burglary resistance — many light fire boxes are exactly that, and are genuinely useful for what they are. Ask which rating a safe carries before assuming it has both.

What a residential safe really protects against

Realistically: fire, water from a burst pipe or a storm, and opportunistic theft by someone in the house for a short time with no tools. Those three cover the overwhelming majority of what actually happens to households. What a residential safe does not defend against is unlimited time with power tools — that is what the higher commercial ratings exist for, and it is not what most families need. Buying honestly means matching the container to the real risk instead of the dramatic one.

Anchoring is what makes a safe a safe

An unanchored safe is a strongbox with a handle. Two people can carry a typical home safe out to a vehicle and open it later, somewhere quiet, with all the time in the world — and at that point the rating on the door has stopped mattering. Nearly every home safe is pre-drilled with anchor holes for exactly this reason.

Bolting into a concrete slab is the strongest option and is common in this area's garages and ground floors. Where there is no slab, anchoring into structural framing rather than into flooring is the alternative, along with placing the safe in a corner where there is no room to lever it. Weight helps but does not substitute — anchoring does. If you take one thing from this section, it is that anchoring an existing safe is the biggest security improvement available to most people, and it is a short visit.

Gun safes

A gun safe carries two obligations at once: keeping firearms away from children and anyone else who should not reach them, and keeping them out of a burglar's hands, since stolen firearms go straight into circulation. Practical things to settle before buying are capacity — the advertised rifle count assumes a perfectly packed interior, so plan on noticeably fewer in practice — whether the interior needs to hold documents and optics as well, how the door swing works in the space available, and how the lock is operated day to day. Anchoring applies here more than anywhere, because a long safe is exactly the shape that gets tipped and walked. Humidity control inside matters in this climate too.

A safe you inherited and cannot open

This comes up often: a safe arrives with a house, or with an estate, and nobody has the combination or the key.

The honest answer is that this is a job for a locksmith, on site, with proof that the safe is yours to open — ownership documentation, or the paperwork from the property or estate. There is no home method worth attempting, and we will not publish one. Attacking a safe yourself typically damages the lock, the door, the fire lining, or all three, converting a recoverable situation into a scrap-metal situation.

What a locksmith actually does depends on the safe. Some can be opened non-destructively by manipulation or by recovering the combination through the manufacturer's records with proof of ownership. Others require a controlled opening and a repair afterwards, which is often still worth doing on a good safe. Either way, the first step is a phone call describing the safe — the type of lock on the front, the approximate age, whether there is a plate with a serial number.

Changing a combination

A safe combination should be changed whenever the safe changes hands, whenever someone who knew it no longer should, and periodically as a matter of habit. On a mechanical dial lock, changing the combination is a procedure done from inside the open door with the correct change key for that lock — not something to improvise, because a mistake made during the process can lock the safe closed on a combination nobody knows. Electronic locks are more forgiving to change but carry their own maintenance, notably batteries and the override key. Either way it is a short job when the safe is open in front of us. A short checklist before you buy anything

You do not need answers to all of those before calling — that is what the call is for. But a household that has looked at its own doors with that list in hand makes much better decisions about where the money goes.

What does an ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 deadbolt actually give me?

Grade 1 is the top tier of the published ANSI/BHMA performance standard. It survives more operating cycles and more force in testing than Grade 2 or Grade 3. The grade describes the lock body only, so a Grade 1 bolt fitted to a thin strike in soft trim does not deliver Grade 1 security.

Should I fit a single cylinder or a double cylinder deadbolt?

Single cylinder in almost every home. It has a thumbturn inside, so anyone can leave immediately without hunting for a key. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides and can trap people during a fire, so it is only ever considered for a door with breakable glass beside the latch, and even then the better answer is usually laminated glazing or a different lock.

Is upgrading the strike plate really worth it?

It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available. A standard strike is thin metal held by short screws into the door casing, which is trim rather than structure. A heavy strike box fixed with screws long enough to reach the framing behind the jamb spreads force into the building instead of the trim.

Does a fire rating on a safe mean it is burglary resistant?

No, and this is the most common misunderstanding in the whole category. A fire rating measures how long the inside stays below a target temperature in a furnace test. A burglary rating measures resistance to attack. They are separate ratings from separate tests, and a safe may carry one, both, or neither.

Does a safe need to be bolted down?

Anchoring is what makes a safe a safe. An unanchored home safe can simply be carried out and opened elsewhere with unlimited time. Bolting it into a concrete slab, or into structural timber for lighter units, removes that option and is the single biggest improvement you can make to a safe you already own.

What about hardware I already bought myself?
